Music class with Keisha was fun as the Cardinals entered the music room and joyfully explored with instruments, followed by singing and movement as Keisha played her guitar! Keisha read us part of the book, Owl Moon, written by Jane Yolen. Keisha then began to teach us a song that goes along with the book. We will continue to read the book and work on the song next week! Ask your Cardinal what they liked about music class?

Tuesday

We reviewed the clothing that we dressed our persona/person in. The Cardinals played a swatter game using their recall memory skills to figure out the Spanish names for some of the clothing we wear. The Cardinals also took a walk and saw our individual persona hanging outside our lower school library!! They all look amazing! Fantastic work Cardinals!! Ask your Cardinal how they created their persona/person?

After Spanish class, we walked over to the gym for some large motor fun. The Cardinals first played "The breath leader," a movement yoga game with Kim. In this game, the Cardinals integrated belly breathing with a movement activity. As Kim stood with her back to the Cardinals, the Cardinals walked in reverse table top towards Kim. Every time Kim turned and faced the kids, the Cardinals had to stop, sit criss cross applesauce, (Sukhasana), and place their hands on their bellies.  This activity is a fun way to help children develop strong muscles and breath awareness at the same time! The Cardinals worked on their core stability and upper body strength as they walked in reverse table top, which are two key components to strong fine motor development. Switching from a movement activity to stillness helps promote self regulation and mind-body awareness.

Wednesday

The Cardinals had a blast engaging in some Olympic ice skating in gym today. Using pennies as skates, the Cardinals glided across the floor. As they moved, the Cardinals learned that if they moved too fast they could fall. Slow and steady was the goal! Using paper plates as skates, you can try a similar activity at home. All you need is a hard surface(not carpeted) and two paper plates. Stand on the paper plates and glide your feet across the floor.  After the Cardinals skated around the gym, they were given an opportunity to freely explore soft foam frisbees and hula hoops.

After gym class, the Cardinals spent some time outside enjoying the fresh air and a bit of warmer weather. Friends were very intrigued with the melting of the snow as the water dripped of the roof outside the third grade classrooms. Many Cardinals used the water to make mud cakes, cupcakes or pies and used one of the sheds as the oven! What a clever idea, Cardinals!!  A couple of friends really wanted to stay inside and work on the decor for our house!!   Ask your Cardinal what they did with the dripping water or what they created for our house?

Thursday

In Art class Amanda introduced us to Barkley L. Hendricks. He was an African American artist who used shiny paper and paint on top of it. Mr Hendrick was born in Philadelphia. The Cardinals explored with painting inspired by Mr Hendrick. Nice masterpieces Cardinals!! Ask your Cardinal what they painted on their shiny paper?
