Today in Spanish class, Alicia showed us the pictures she took of our faces. The faces were attached to a persona/person. Alicia told us that the Cardinals will work over the next couple of weeks to paint and then dress their own persona/person. The Cardinals has been learning the Spanish words for some of the clothing we wear and now friends will get a chance to dress their own persona/person. Alicia read us the book called HoneySmoke and today it was Tristan's turn to squeezed la vaca!

We have noticed that our Cardinals love and truly enjoy building with many different types of building materials. After returning to our classroom from Spanish class, we asked each Cardinal, "If you had a box what would you do with it? Here's what friends had to say:

We then read the book If I Built A House, by Chris Van Dusen. At the end of the book many Cardinals shared more detailed ideas as to what they might want to make. We showed the Cardinals 6 huge boxes that arrived in our classroom this morning.  We also gave them a bit of thinking homework in which friends needed to think more about what they might want to make with our boxes!

As we came in from recess, friends made comments about how cold it was outside. A teacher asked the question, "What do you think would happen if we put water in a cup and put it outside? Here's some of what friends had to say: it would freeze, it would spill out, if it's cold it would freeze, turn to ice, melt into water, it would explode, turn to liquid, you could put toys in the water but you have to water till summer for the ice to melt.  So, we put several containers of different sizes filled with water and some with animals outside our classroom to see what happens. The Cardinals are very excited.... Stay tuned!

Wednesday

Today the Cardinals continued to brainstorm building ideas. We read  the book, Not A Box, written by Antoinette Portis.  In the book, a rabbit uses their imagination to turn a cardboard box into many different things. Following the read aloud, we discussed how the rabbit in the story had many ideas of what the box could be. We then introduced the term architect to the class. The class learned that, just like the rabbit in the story, an architect comes up with many ideas for a building before picking the one that is just right. The Cardinals enjoyed a video about architects where they learned about the process of creating a blueprint to develop and present their ideas.

The Cardinals shared their thoughts from their thinking homework about, "If you had a box what would you do with it? Here's what some friends had to say: Make wonder woman, a huge house, I didn't do my homework, make a rocket ship, a race car, a treehouse and a bus.

We checked on our containers filled with water and discovered that they were still filled with water. We will continued to check on them!

Thursday

The Cardinals continued to learn about blueprints. We revisited  how architects use blue prints to create ideas for new buildings. With many students interested in cars, we introduced the term mechanical engineer. Mechanical engineers create blueprints for modes of transportation such as cars, planes and trains. We watched another video about blueprints and learned that in class tomorrow each Cardinal will be creating their own blue prints! Once our blueprints are created, each Cardinal will share their ideas with the class!

Yoga with Kim!!

After reading books and having conversations, today we asked each Cardinal, "What would you like to create with a box?" Here is what friends had to say:

In art class with Emilee, we drew habitats for animals. The Cardinals used cut out animal pictures, glue and crayon pastels.  Friends each chose an animal they wanted to make a home for. Ask your Cardinal what is a habitat?

Friday

Early this morning most of our resource teachers came to our classroom to help the Cardinals brainstorm about their very own blueprints. This community time was special, as we usually go to our resource teachers classrooms. Friends also got to work one on one with an adult without having to wait.  The Cardinals did an amazing job telling our resource teachers what they have learned so far. Then, we began our work of creating our own blueprints. Friends designed their ideas on both side of their paper and named them. Great work Cardinals!!
