As we were walking down to the Spanish room, some Cardinals saw Alicia and started saying, "Hola Alicia." This made Alicia smile wider as she continued to greet friends as we entered the Spanish room. This week we reviewed the parts of the body mentioned in the song head-n-shoulders by singing the song, without Alicia's help. Again the Cardinals were amazing!! They knew every word!! We then reviewed some of the basic colors by singing a chant, first with Alicia's help then without her helping. Again the Cardinals were awesome! After, to reinforce this learning, Alicia played a game she calls, ¿Qué falta? (What's missing?). Make sure to ask your Cardinal how it is played. It was Melanie's turn to squeeze la vaca today!

The Cardinals were very excited to have a picnic lunch outside on this warm November afternoon!
Wednesday
Today we continued our work on our November self-portraits.
In gym class with Josh and Lisa we had a ball (pun intended) as we used scoops to collect pit balls! We worked on our gross and fine motor skills as we scooped up balls and placed the balls into our very own colored bucket. Many friends collected so many balls that their buckets began to overflow! Once we were finished with the game, we all worked together to put the many, many balls back into Josh's giant bag. Don't let the Cardinals fool you at home, they are all very good at cleaning up :)
Our outdoor explorations are filled with such creative learning. Below are some detailed quotes from the Cardinals as they worked and interact individually or in small groups!
"Come on we need make lot pancakes for everyone." "I know let's put some fruit and bacon too and syrup too. You like that?"
"We going high and low." "You need hold on tight so you don't fall off."
Friends taking turns with the big funnel and having conversations. "I put the sand in the little hole." "We working together, right." I finding the marble that Reyn lost." "I practice climbing like Spiderman."
"I so strong to climb this."
"Look, I go fast."
"I building a house with wood."
Thursday
Our whole AFS community took part in a practice fire drill today. We spoke with the Cardinals in order to prepare them for what was going to happen such as the loud noise, which door we will exit, what we need to do once outside and where we will be going to be safe. After the practice drill, we talked to the Cardinals to see how they felt. We asked, "What did you think about our practice fire drill?"
Here is what friends had to say:
Hayden - Cool, cause I like the beeping sound.
Isabelle - I never did that before.
Melanie - I lining up and being quite.
Ekin - Too loud.
Ben - Fun, cause the beeping noise.
Phoenix - I don't like the noise.
Tristan - I cover my ears.
Emma - I wait patiently in line.
Reyn - It wasn't a real fire just we need practice.
Stephen - Scare.
Blaise - I don't like it cause it make me scared
Rowan - I didn't like the noise.
Clarke - I like being outside.
Oz - I don't like that noise it so loud.
After spending time outside exploring, we headed to art class with Amanda and Emily, and guess what?! Our pots we made out of clay were done baking in the kiln. We sat around the big table as Amanda showed us a piece of wet clay and a piece of baked clay. We explored how the properties of clay change after the clay was heated in the kiln. Most importantly, we learned to be careful with our baked pottery, as we don't want to drop them, because they will break. Next came the fun part...PAINTING our clay :) Did you know the name of the paint that we used on our clay is called glaze? Amanda taught us how to paint the glaze onto our pottery. Once we are finished painting our pottery, back into the kiln it goes again! The glaze will heat and become bright and shiny. We had fun painting and are very excited to see the finished results! The Cardinals will bring their finished work home very soon!
Friday
Today we celebrated Tristan's 4th Birthday!! Thanks Tristan for sharing your special day with us!! We wish you a wonderful Birthday weekend!!
Choice time and small group work in rotating stations.
At our library time, Ashanti read us the book called Hello Goodbye Dog. Friends were engaged in listening to the story and liked hearing all the things the dog named Moose could do such as helping people who can't see cross the street, going on planes, going to school and playing with kids. Friends had many comments and questions about the story such as "why people can't see, you need a grown up to cross the street, dog don't go to school only kids and teachers, my dog at my house only sleep all the time. The Cardinals each then picked and checked out a book to bring back to our classroom.
Ask your Cardinal what they enjoy doing on the playground at school?
Have a nice weekend!
