Today, the Cardinals worked on their first journal entry title; What do you like to do at school? Friends drew pictures of what they like to do at school and gave detailed dictation as a teacher wrote. Other friends began the process of kid writing. A teacher stretched each word out and friends wrote the letters they heard. Friends went a bit further by making finger space to separate each word as they wrote. These are all the very beginning steps in the process of writing.
Small group cooperative and creative engagement.
Keisha welcome us into the music room and after exploring with instruments and singing our hello song, Jambo. We sang and did the movement to where are the bees. We did the movement with one hand then the other hand and then with both hands. While singing, we use our fingers to represent the bees as we count. Keisha then gave each Cardinal a jingle bell for our next activity Bell Horses. Friends shook the bells and did the movement that Keisha instructed us to do such as running, hopping, tip-toeing, flying, glopping, jump and turning! Then it was time for us to sing our goodbye song as Keisha played the guitar.
Tuesday -
After saying Buenos días, ¿Cómo estás and friends responding (muy bien or así-así or no muy bien. The Cardinals sang head-n-shoulders all by themselves in Spanish. Awesome singing in Spanish Cardinals, we are so proud of you! The Cardinals continued their work on los colores (the colors). Friends used the huge swatters and worked in pairs to find the flashcard to match the colors called out in Spanish. We then played the Camina, camina (Walk, walk) game and walked around the Spanish room and pointed out more colors. Alicia then introduced Perrito (Puppy) who helped us sing our goodbye song with lots of giggles from the Cardinals. This week is was Hayden's turned to squeezed la vaca.
Wednesday -
The Cardinals went with the other two EC classes and Kindergarten to the meeting house today for the first time this school year. As we walked in Raji (one of the Kindergarten teachers) was playing his guitar softly. We then settled into silence after Carol, an EC teacher, explained what we were going to be doing in the meetinghouse such as seating in silence, standing to speak, and singing. On our way back to our class room friends notice a really bright and vibrant tree with different color leaves. We stopped to take a closer look and gather some of the beautiful leaves to take back to our classroom.
Thursday -
After snack the Cardinals were still a bit hungry! As a large group activity Kim created a gigantic imaginary pizza with the Cardinals by doing yoga! The pizza filled our bellies, but don't worry we still had room for lunch. To make the pizza we sat in a big circle on the morning meeting rug and stretched our bodies and imaginations as we incorporated various stretches to make a pretend pizza. Each student put a topping on the pizza. To sharpen their memory skills the Cardinals had to try to remember what each student put on the pizza as well as the movement we did to represent the topping. Adding some balancing and yoga poses, we made the dough, put topping on, and cooked our pretend pizza. Then each Cardinal ate a big slice! The next time you order out for a real pizza, you may want to try our toppings. The Cardinals' toppings included a lot of cheese, pepperoni, lots of candy, a cake and some ice cream, or maybe just leave some of the toppings for your imagination :)
In art class today, we worked with Emily, the student teacher. We had a great deal of fun working with some of our favorite mediums like glue and colorful paper! We created 3-dimensional sculptures as we folded strips of paper and glued them to a larger piece of paper. We learned how to make our paper strips curl and fold as we created different paper sculptures. Great work Cardinals!
