Friends running and playing outside with streamers and balls on this warm 74 degree day in March!
In music class, the Cardinals as a group did the movement and chant to This little cow. Keisha then taught us the chorus of a song about trains. The song was in Spanish. We also learned fun movements to go along with the song. We learned that in Spain people do not say choo-choo for the sound of a train, they say chuka-chaka. Each friend then got two eggs to shake as they pretended to be a train and sang chuka-chaka. Next class, Keisha will teach us the Spanish words for the song.
Tuesday
Early morning choice time!
Alicia read the book, Esta es mi casa (This is my house) by Jan Reynolds. The book showed photographs of houses around the world and what they look like and are made of. After revising the Spanish words for basic geometrical shapes, Alicia invited the Cardinals to find shapes that made up the houses on each page. Some friends called out a few shapes in Spanish, while some friends called out the shapes in English and Alicia helped them to say the shapes in español. This week it was James's turn to squeezed la vaca!
Rowan's mom Roxanne told us that the Middle school students were having a bake sale to help raise money for people in Ukraine. Rowan went to help out and came back and talked about it. And so, the Cardinal class took a walk and brought some nut-free mini cake cups to help support this important cause! After lunch each Cardinal ate a cupcake. Thank you, Middle school for being so kind and thoughtful!!
Wednesday
This morning the Cardinals had Meeting for Worship in our classroom instead of the meeting house. It was a little different as we started with silence for 5 minutes. We then asked each Cardinal, "What were you thinking about during our silence." Here is what the Cardinals had to say:
Melanie - That I was digging for dinosaur bones.
Blaise - I was singing on a stage.
Clarke - I was thinking about playing with my friends.
James - I don't know.
Hayden - I was building a house.
Ben - I was a digger and I dig a mountain.
Isabelle - I was in a rocket ship going to outer space.
Emma - I was at gymnastic.
Phoenix - I was thinking about going to gym with Josh.
Stephen - I don't know.
Rowan - If they was a monkey made of bananas in space.
Reyn - I was thinking I was a dream collector.
Tristan - I was a construction worker.
Alycia - I was a Princess.
Oz - I was Spiderman saving the world.
We continued with an activity in which we all settled our bodies back into silences. Then, two at a time, the Cardinals got two wooden blocks and placed them anywhere they chose on a large black paper. Before we began we told the class two important rules to follow, "You can not move anyone's blocks and you need to do our activity in silences." Wow, our Cardinals did a fantastic job!!
As a group, the Cardinals are growing and beginning to understand how to play cooperative games. Because of this new interest and understanding, Josh will begin to work with the Cardinals and teach them some organized games. Our hope is that the Cardinals will take these new skills to recess and play games together during their free choice outdoor time.
Thursday
This morning during choice time the Cardinals started to work on a journal entry titled, "How would you make vegetable soup?" Friends were very creative with the many different ways they would make vegetable soup. We also worked on shapes and colors as we played a game of bingo and snail pace. Friends did a nice job of remembering which friend's turn it was to go next.
In art class today, Amanda introduced us to the term sculpture. We learned that a sculpture is a statue we can see from all sides. To make our own sculptures we sanded wood pieces and glued them together to make our very own abstract design! It was fun sanding the wood and making it nice and smooth. We even got to wear fun safety glasses to protect our eyes from the wood dust as we sanded it. Ask your Cardinal what sculpture they created!
Friday
Isabelle will be turning 5 years old over the weekend. To begin the festivities, Isabelle brought in cupcakes to celebrate her birthday. The Cardinals were very excited to celebrate with Isabelle. Thank you, Isabelle for sharing your birthday with us!
Choosing and checking out their own books from the library is a big highlight each week for the Cardinals. These books are usually claimed as "mine" by the Cardinal who borrowed them from the library. Today, Ashanti read us two books, My Best Friend by Julie Fogliano, and Crabby Pants by Julie Gassman before we got to choose our own books.
Friends making a cake.
Friends exploring and having fun on the climber.
Have a wonderful weekend!
