The Cardinals began the day by working on their October self-portraits. What are self-portraits - Each month the Cardinals work in small groups and individually draw their own self-portraits. Friends look in mirrors to take a closer look at the details that make up their features such as hair, lips and eye color and how many ears they have. Friends learned where these details are located on their bodies and how to translate these important details on to paper. As the school year progresses, it is amazing to see how these drawings evolve from simple stick drawings to faces and bodies filled with color and details. Friends also gain insight as to the beauty of themselves and do not need to rely on a mirror.
Tuesday
Today in Spanish class, we individually greeted Alicia in Spanish before beginning class. We then had a moment of silence as Alicia tapped the singing bowl. The Cardinals went over the calendar in Spanish and counted the numbers on the calendar up to 12, all in Spanish. We went over our body parts as the Cardinals sang head-n-shoulders in Spanish; cabeza (head), hombro (shoulders), rodillas (knees), dos pies (two feet), nariz (nose), orejas (ears) and ojos (eyes). Alicia then played two games with us. The first, she placed flashcards on the rug and called a body part in Spanish. Using matamoscas (fly swatters), two friends at a time worked to find that body part by gently tapping the picture to represent the body part. In the second game, the Cardinals walked around the Spanish room, when Alicia called a body part in Spanish, the Cardinals stopped and touched that body part. We sang our goodbye song and this week it was Clarke's turn to squeezed la vaca.
